Visit Ahipao: Waiheke Island's Cashmere Micro Factory

One of the most unique things to do on Waiheke Island, and it isn't a winery.

Waiheke is famous for wine. But 200 metres from the ferry at Matiatia, there's something you won't find anywhere else on the island. A working knitwear factory, where every piece is designed, knitted and hand finished right here on Waiheke.

Come in. We'll show you around.

See how it's made

We have an open studio policy. That means you don't just browse a shop. We take you through our micro factory and show you every step, from a cone of yarn to a finished garment.

- Watch our knitting machines at work
- See garments being linked and hand finished
- Feel the difference between cashmere, possum and silk
- Meet the people who make every piece

It takes about 15 minutes, it's free, and there's no booking needed.

A Waiheke souvenir that means something

Most souvenirs end up in a drawer. Ours end up being worn for years.

Every Ahipao piece is made right here on Waiheke Island from natural fibres, including our signature blend of New Zealand possum, cashmere and silk. It's soft, warm, light enough to pack, and made a few steps from where you're standing.

If you're looking for a New Zealand made gift, or something special to take home from Waiheke, this is it.

Only in store

Some things never make it to our website.

- Factory seconds at reduced prices
- One-off designs and samples
- New pieces before they launch online

We make knitwear for everyone. Our range includes womenswear and menswear, in inclusive sizing from XS to 4XL. Try pieces on in store and our team will help you find the right fit.

A family business, made locally

Ahipao is run by mother and daughter Esme and Alannah, with a small team of local makers. When you shop with us, you're supporting a Waiheke family business and keeping manufacturing alive in New Zealand.

Our name, Ahipao, is the te reo Māori name for the land our building sits on, gifted by Ngāti Paoa.
